Jack Kearney, founder of Fremont’s industrial design firm Company K (206.632.0509; companyk.com), has been bending steel to his will since 1999. You’ll find his metal furniture, lighting and architectural elements in residences throughout the region, and his doors have serious design weight. Take this 80-by-90-inch naval bronze door he designed and fabricated for a Queen Anne house for Dovetail General Contractors (dovetailgc.com). It’s clad over a steel tube structure with custom pivots and a vertical illumination component made by local glass artist Peter David (peterdavidstudio.com). “The slumped-glass piece ‘pierces’ the door to bring in light during the day, and at night, it acts as light strip,” Kearney says. “The handle is built into the glass.” To create its manly luster, Kearney gave it a dark brown patina and a paste-wax finish.
