The crowd that filed into the Pan Pacific Seattle Hotel on Thursday, March 21, was a well-heeled one, with ladies donning sky-high stilettos and gentlemen in tailored sport coats. An unexpected sight for the opening of Seattle’s latest designer gym.

Barry’s Bootcamp (South Lake Union, 112 Westlake Ave. N) now occupies the former Lignet Roset retail space at the corner of Westlake Avenue and Denny Way. Originally founded in West Hollywood, the fitness studio with locations nationwide, is famous for its high-intensity, one-hour workouts. Barry’s loyalists have been eagerly anticipating the Seattle opening, citing the effective classes and social atmosphere among the benefits. “I felt like I could high five the person on the treadmill next to me at my first class,” said one attendee at the opening soiree, in her heels.

“Seattle has been on the top of our list for a long time, it was only a matter of finding the right real estate,” says Joey Gonzalez, the company’s CEO. “Our current location in South Lake Union took some time to nail down, and we love it for our first location.”

In addition to daily classes in the “red room,” a signature designer feature, fitness enthusiasts will enjoy elevated amenities including locker rooms stocked with Oribe hair products and a Fuel Bar, where smoothies and healthy beverages can be pre-ordered before class begins. The lobby entry features exclusive retail options, including apparel and water bottles, for those who want to showcase their love for Barry’s around town.

Across the water, another high-profile gym opening is happening at Lincoln Square South in Bellevue, where Russell Wilson and Alex Rodriguez have teamed with local entrepreneurs Scott Swerland and Taryn Naidu to open TruFusion’s first Washington location (Bellevue, 500 Bellevue Way NE).

The national chain opened its first gym in Las Vegas in 2013, offering a variety of group workouts in heated and unheated rooms. The Bellevue location offers 240 classes a week, ranging from yoga to boot camp workouts. Stay tuned for Seattle locations, which are slated to open in the coming months.

Change is inevitable. Let’s embrace it.

So, I shut up for the next minute or maybe even two. I stopped listening to what was being said and let my eyes wander around the studio before I began staring distantly at a spot on the wall above the window that looked out into the newsroom. I was like a pinball machine that
