!–paging_filter–pSadly, once again the Mariners finished far outside of the playoffs (and by extension, the World Series). But the fall classic is still awfully fun for any baseball fan to watch, and I’m guessing we have a fair number of Red Sox and Cardinals fans in Seattle, too. So, I’ve lined up four cocktails that pair mighty well with this year’s baseball championship. (Game 2 of the series is tonight at 5:07 p.m. at Fenway Park in Boston.) The first three recipes are from ema href=”http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Spirits-Concoctions-Starring-Bourbon/dp/B005I…” target=”_blank”Dark Spirits/a/em, the last one fromem a href=”http://www.amazon.com/Good-Spirits-Recipes-Revelations-Refreshments/dp/1…” target=”_blank”Good Spirits/a/em./p
pstrongThumper:/strong If you don’t have, as they say, a dog in the hunt, at least you can hope for two things during the series: either a lot of home runs or a perfect game, because both add enough drama to make any fan get excited. If you’re a home run lover, then your drink should be this one, in honor of the big bats./p
pemIce cubesbr2 ounces brandybr1 ounce Tuacabr1/2 ounce sweet vermouthbrLemon twist for garnish/em/p
p1. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway full with ice cubes. Add the brandy, Tuaca, and sweet vermouth. Stir well. Thumpingly well.br2. Strain into a cocktail glass. Twist the twist over the glass and drop it in./p
pstrongCardinal:/strong This of course is for the fans from St. Louis, and is a punch, so it’s ideal to make for a group. It’s actually one of my favorite punches even outside of baseball season. It serves about 10./p
pem12 ounces brandybr12 ounces dark rumbr1 pint claret (or other Bordeaux wine)br12 ounces a href=”http://\/\/seattlemag.com/cocktail-mixers-you-should-make-not-buy-and-ho…” target=”_blank”Simple Syrup/abr4 ounces sweet vermouthbr1 ice round, or cracked icebr1 orange, cut into slicesbr5 fresh pineapple rounds, cut into chunksbrOne 2-liter bottle chilled club sodabrOne 750-milliliter bottle brut Champagne or sparkling wine/em/p
pbr1. Add the brandy, rum, claret, Simple Syrup, and vermouth to a large punch bowl. Stir briefly.br2. Add the ice round to the punch, or add enough cracked ice so that the bowl is almost halfway full.br3. Add the orange slices, pineapple, and club soda (slowly on that last one to avoid spillage). Stir briefly again.br4. Add the Champagne (again, slowly), and stir briefly one last time. Serve in wine glasses./p
pstrongWard Eight:/strong Perhaps the most revered classic drink to come out of Boston, this has a ton of historical relevance that aligns nicely with the World Series. For Boston fans, it also has a nice coloring that may not be identical to your team’s colors, but is pretty close./p
pemIce cubesbr2 ounces rye (a href=”http://www.woodinvillewhiskeyco.com/products/” target=”_blank”Woodinville rye/a is a good choice)br1 ounce Simple Syrupbr3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juicebr1/4 ounce a href=”http://\/\/seattlemag.com/cocktail-mixers-you-should-make-not-buy-and-ho…” target=”_blank”grenadine/abrOrange slice for garnishbrMaraschino cherry for garnish/em/p
pbr1. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway full with ice cubes. Add the rye, Simple Syrup, and lime juice. Shake well.br2. Add the grenadine to the shaker, and shake twice more.br3. Strain the mix into a goblet and garnish with the orange and cherry (it gets hungry watching the games)./p
pstrongPerfect:/strong If you’re not praying for home runs and drinking the Thumper (above), and you aren’t specifically rooting for the Cards or the Sox, then you must be a pitching devotee. Which means this drink is for you, as it’s the, well, perfect drink to celebrate a perfect game.nbsp;/p
pemIce cubesbr1-1/2 ounces gin (a href=”http://www.pacificdistillery.com” target=”_blank”Voyager gin/a is pretty swell here)br3/4 ounce dry vermouthbr3/4 ounce sweet vermouthbrOrange or lemon slice for garnish (or skip)/em/p
p1. Fill a cocktail shaker half way with ice cubes. Add the gin first, and then the vermouths. Stir well.br2. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with either an orange or lemon slice or nothing at all (I’ve seen it all ways, and have it differently depending on mood. Do the same and stay happy)./p
