The Space Needle’s writer in residence, and our own editor at large Knute Berger, has just published Space Needle: The Spirit of Seattle. The 50th-anniversary history follows the Needle from a cocktail-napkin sketch to a Life magazine cover story, exploring both weird trivia (the builders who worked atop the Needle never wore harnesses!) and all the characters that helped launch the 1962 World’s Fair. It takes, if you will, Berger’s known savvy and funny insights into Seattle’s strange history to all new heights. (Wink.)

Pick up a copy this week via Eagle Harbor Books on Bainbridge Island, where Berger will be giving his first reading from the book on Thursday evening.

He’s sharing the stage with Jim Lynch, who has penned the equally fascinating book Truth Like the Sun, a fictional account inspired by the same era of 1960s “Mad Men” politics in Seattle.

For mainlanders, the reading is a great excuse to enjoy an evening ferry ride and explore one of our fave restaurants, Hitchcock.

5/17, 7:30 p.m. Eagle Harbor Books, 157 Winslow Way E., Bainbridge Island; 206.842.5332; eagleharborbooks.com.
