Holiday Gift Guide, Day 3: Fun Foodie Books by Local Authors

Top o’ the morning! We’re kicking off this week’s lineup of our holiday gift guide with oh-so-Northwest books written by Seattle magazine friends including forager Langdon Cook and spirits expert A.J. Rathbun. Stay tuned this week for more local gift ideas (jewelry, easy-to-grab-hostess favors and booze-inspired gifts will all debut by Friday!) as we offer new suggestions each weekday through December 23.



For beginners: The Newlywed Kitchen, by Lorna Yee and Ali Basye


Key Ingredient columnist Lorna Yee and former Seattle Bride editor Ali Basye’s The Newlywed Kitchen (Sasquatch Books, 2010) is a perfect gift for any young couple, as the duo explores and outlines fun recipes to make together. The 83 recipes also ramp up in intensity and skill level as couples grow more comfortable with cooking. (Tip from an “oldy-wed”: Despite the name, any cook will enjoy Yee’s delectable recipes, so I think it’s a great idea for married and non-married peeps, alike.)



For the fearless forager: Fat of the Land: Adventures of a 21st Century Forager, by Langdon Cook


Cooks' Adventures columnist Langdon Cook goes off the beaten path in his sparkling debut (Skipstone Press, 2009), outlining his tips and tricks for foraging in the Northwest with his trademark wit and humor. Each chapter outlines a new type of “food” (think rose hips that grow near Lake Union, stinging nettles and edible backyard weeds) along with an accompanying recipe.



For cocktail aficionados: Ginger Bliss and Violet Fizz: A Cocktail Lover’s Guide to Mixing Drinks Using New and Classic Liqueurs, by A.J. Rathbun


Author and Bar Hop columnist A.J. Rathbun know his booze (case in point, his 9 other books on cocktails and party snacks, plus his beautiful December feature story about the booming local distillery scene). His latest book suits (Harvard Common Press, 2011) the inner cocktail nerd in us all, delving into timeless liqueurs enjoyed by Don Draper types with over 200 classic and new cocktail recipes—New Year’s Eve drinks, anyone?
