Museum Quality Gifting

With the Wing Luke Asian Museum and Northwest African American Museum unveiled this year, and SAM’s new space and Olympic Sculpture Park in full swing, we tapped into one of the city’s best-kept secret shopping resources to bring you inspired ideas for this season’s gift-giving: our local museum gift shops.

The Carry-On Bag
Whether traveling to Europe or the grocery store, this one-of-a-kind tote by Enumclaw-based Jumpseat Bags, handcrafted from vintage airplane seat cover fabric and seatbelt straps, will hold all your treasures. $225 at the Museum of Flight (Georgetown, 9404 E Marginal Way S; 206.764.5720; museumofflight.org).

Glasses that Pop
Add a little whimsy to your dining table with these drinking glasses from celebrated Japanese pop artist Yoshitomo Nara, featuring characters similar to his work on display at SAM. $18–$24 each at the Seattle Art Museum (Downtown, 1300 First Ave.; 206.654.3100; seattleartmuseum.org).

Attack of the Figurines
Indulge your inner child with these Horrified B Movie action figures, each one frozen in a different terrified state. Are they running from a giant slimy monster or traffic on the 520 bridge? $19.99 per set of eight at the Science Fiction Museum (Lower Queen Anne, 325 Fifth Ave. N; 206.724.3428; empsfm.org).

Wearable Art
The pen-and-ink drawings by local artist Amy Nikaitani on this silk scarf are based on streetscapes in Seattle’s International District. $75 at the Wing Luke Asian Museum (International District, 719 S King St.; 206.623.5124; wingluke.org).

Painting 101
The artistically challenged on your gift list can fake it in style with these nostalgic acrylic paint-by-number kits that come with everything needed to create eight masterpieces, including this one of the City of Lights. $19.95 at the Frye Art Museum (First Hill, 704 Terry Ave.; 206.622.9250; fryeart.org).

Lap It Up
Feeling the urge to splurge? Class up Fido’s dishware with a fanciful glass dog bowl hand-blown in the museum’s Hot Shop by local glass artist Gabe Feenan. $150 at Tacoma’s Museum of Glass (Tacoma, 1801 Dock St.; 253.284.4750; museumofglass.org).

Attention, Shoppers
With or without a bag tax, eco-minded shoppers are toting reusable bags, and the hunt is on for the most chic reusable bag. The vintage-inspired prints of these 100-percent recycled woven polypropylene bags give a nod to BAM’s focus on crafts. $14.75 at Bellevue Arts Museum (Bellevue, 510 Bellevue Way NE; 425.519.0770; bellevuearts.org).

Rockin Dreams
Let the man in your life express his not-so-secret desire to be a guitar hero with these pillowcases depicting an amp and electric guitar. $24.95 for a pair at Experience Music Project (Lower Queen Anne, 325 Fifth Ave. N; 206.770.2702; empsfm.org).
