A Blissful Trio at Cupcake Royale

Cupcake Royale's Deathcake Royale
Recently, Seattle magazine editors had the distinct pleasure of tasting Cupcake Royale's new take on their infamously sinful Deathcake Royale—a perfect melange of a few of our most delectable local treats, including Theo's Chocolate (for the ganache that serves as icing) and Stumptown Coffee (for the espresso-infused truffle that rockets like a chocolate volcano through the middle). The Deathcake is now the same size as a regular cupcake (less guilt! sort of) and costs less than last year's version as well. As always, it's only available through February 14th, so hurry, people, seriously.

We also tried Royale's brand new salted caramel cupcakes (chocolate cake base with salted caramel icing), which we decided were well worth dying for too. (We'd show you a picture but we gobbled them up before anyone thought to snap a photo.) President Obama, who has proclaimed Fran's salted caramels his favorite sweat treat, might want to hop on this express train to yum-town.

I also want to give a huge thumbs-up to the regular chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting, which I tried last weekend. It was actually moist and even a little warm from the oven! I'd heard that Cupcake Royale had brought in Sue McCown to update/improve the cupcakes, and her work is obvious. I'd gotten sadly used to the cupcakes at Royale being dried out and dissapointing, and the two we tasted (the other being a really good carrot cake with cream cheese frostings) were a huge improvement.
