Pagliacci’s End-of-the-World Pizza

All set for Doomsday?

It’s coming right up, you know. At least that’s what the latest mailer from Pagliacci says.

Yes, we’ve been hearing about December 21, 2012 as the end of the Mayan calendar for years, and some predict the end of the world as we know it.

But for a restaurant/pizza delivery chain to actually embrace it as a sales and marketing tool?

Pretty darned crazy/brilliant!

This fall/winter newsletter pokes fun at the never-ending string of doomsday predictions. Remember Y2K? What a bust.

There is a mention of climate change and a Zombie Apocalypse, tips for throwing a Doomsday party – cue up Blade Runner – before the newsletter concludes with “Whatever happens on December 21, 2012, we’ll still be tossing and delivering pizza. It may just be by a zombie.”

Ha! Very clever.

While reading these amusing pieces and chuckling, I started craving the fall pie special: chanterelle mushrooms from Foraged & Found paired with La Querica prosciutto, cured in Iowa on top of mozzarella and a garlic sauce. Better make it two! Might as well live it up before that big day rolls around on the calendar.

Just when I thought it was way out there for a company to embrace this so-called impending final curtain, I spotted Shock Top’s End of the World Midnight Wheat on tap at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery this weekend while I was in St. Louis covering the first-ever Kingsford Invitational Barbecue Cooking Contest. (Yes, I ate my weight in pig.) Bet that beer would taste mighty fine alongside a Pagliacci pie.
