Eddie Bauer celebrates 90 years of outdoor outfitting this year with a Smithsonian-caliber archive of historic items from the Seattle-based brand. Open since May, the archive sweeps adventure aficionados through a timeline of EB’s impressive firsts, including the first American shuttlecock (the company started as a tennis shop in the ’20s and expanded to badminton in the ’30s), the first down jacket patented in America (the 1936 Skyliner—take that, REI!), and the first mountaineering parka (the 1953 Kara Koram jacket). The idea of ogling antique jackets got us wondering about other rarely seen firsts and faves from local companies. This could be the start of some trendy archiving. Eddie Bauer headquarters, 10401 NE Eighth St., Bellevue; 425.755.6100; archive open by appointment only; email firstname.lastname@example.org.
