If the recession is still raging, it wasn’t apparent at Taste Washington Sunday, March 27 at Qwest Field. Of the 200+ wineries there, there were dozens that have just released their first wines—jumping into the wine business fray with vigor. A few of my new favorites are miniscule, but just as passionate about producing excellent wine with Washington’s premium fruit, as larger and more well-known favorites.

Memaloose – around since 2006, but still a young winery, Memaloose is a family affair. Winemaker Brian McCormick and his wife, Maria and his father and mother, Rob and Barbara McCormick own a farm in Mosier, Oregon as well as vineyard near Lyle in the Columbia Gorge, where the grapes for Memaloose wines are grown. The wines are food-friendly and balanced, and obviously come from a family with focus and passion for balanced, elegant wine. winesofthegorge.com/story
Nodland Cellars – Tim and Tracy Nodland are partners in marriage and winemaking. THey keep things simple, making just one white wine and one red. Their first vintage release was 2005, and the blends change each year, depending on what they feel are the best grapes available.
