Food-thusiasts everywhere are celebrating Julia Child’s 100th birthday today (Aug.15) with French Chef viewing marathons, a video remix guaranteed to make you grin and all sorts of lavish tribute dinners around the globe.
I’m going to mark the centennial by wolfing down a burger at Brave Horse Tavern.
That’s right. Yesterday, I spotted a Tweet from the Tavern deep in the heart of Amazonia: “In honor of Julia Child's 100th birthday we present the Biftek Haché à la Lyonnaise as our #burgeroftheweek.”
Then, there was the drool-worthy pic in a subsequent Tweet and the full description on the menu: ground chuck patty studded with buttered onions and thyme, basted in butter, melty gruyere, bibb lettuce, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard on a Dahlia Bakery bun.
What really sold me, though, was the video clip attached to the first post on the mini microblog, giving credit for inspiring the burger. It's an appearance by Julia on David Letterman, circa the late 1980s. She was an absolute hoot, of course, but this goofy segment reminds fans that she was an equal opportunity eater. The woman who started a culinary revolution in this country got as excited about burgers as she did about over-the-top fancy food.
That’s certainly worth a saucy, savory salute!
