Margaritas are starting to sound really good right now. Not because the sun is starting to peek through the Seattle skies a little more often, but a new Mexican restaurant is on the fast-track to opening in Phinney Ridge.
Partners Chris Navarra (Prost!, The Ridge, Martino’s ), Shannon Wilkinson (Little Water Cantina) and Chris Gerke (Nickerson Street Saloon, Martino’s) are opening Hecho in the old Carmelita space (7314 Greenwood Ave. N.). It will serve handmade, high-quality Mexican food using (say it with me) Northwest ingredients.
Earlier this year, Navarra told me they chose the name, which means “made," because "everything will be made by hand: tortillas, chips, food, drinks etc." That also goes for the tables and metalwork, which Navarra made. Pretty impressive for a guy whose background is in advertising.
He took me on a little tour of the place yesterday afternoon, anxious to get the clutter cleared in time for a little soft opening, which he would like to keep hush-hush. What I can tell you that the place will likely open last week of March.
And it’s coming along quite nicely, from what I could tell.
Hecho will seat 110 people, including the bar. Last June when Navarra broke the news, he told me that Hecho (initially, it was going to be called Vecino) would be in line with what Little Water Cantina does, but tailored specifically to the neighborhood he’s called home for more than a decade. “The goal is to have something for everyone. There will be some big tables so you can bring the kids, but it will definitely be a date spot, too.”
One of the best parts of this place is already in place: the original little outdoor patio — a little garden area that most Carmelita regulars didn’t even know existed. It will double as an herb garden for the kitchen, which Wilkinson will be in charge of.
Hecho will be open for dinner daily, and then roll out weekend brunch around summer. Follow its progress on Facebook.
