Seattle Mariners Are Hot And So Is Their Food
Have you heard?
Our Boys of Summer are streaking. Yup, the Seattle Mariners have won eight in a row and are poised to--knock on wood--make it number nine today at a deliciously sunny day game.
Yet, as much as I enjoy cheering those victories, going to The Safe’s always fun, W or L.
I wrote a story for this month’s Mariners magazine on my Top 10 bites around the ballpark. (Sorry stinky tater fans, garlic fries did not make the cut.) In this list, I boldly declared that Safeco Field has the best food in major league baseball, starting with pulled pork nachos to the Field Roast Franks and oyster po’boy made with fried bivalves from Taylor Shellfish and one of the best Caesar salads in the city, no joke, it's at Apizza in The 'Pen. I’m nuts about the craft cocktails and chicarones--the fried pork skin made from local pig--at Edgar’s Cantina. Every game I go to, I roam around the stadium looking for something new to love and recently I found two.
Absolutely adore the First Base Vine, the new wine bar featuring Northwest pours. (On the main concourse near section 126.) The selection changes regularly, but I sure savored a (plastic) glass of Seven Hills merlot.
And, just when I thought I was so over the whole chicken and waffles thing, I tried a winning version of that odd combo at the Hit It Here Café. This fresh take was a sandwich, starring grilled Draper Farms chicken and bright, crunchy slaw tucked into a slightly sweet waffle. YAY!
I’ll be in the stands this afternoon, yelling my lungs out for my favorite players: Raul Ibanez, Nick Franklin, Kyle Seager and the Mariner Moose.
And in between innings, I’ll get up and go on the hunt for something tasty. I won’t have to look very far.
