Tom Douglas Grounded in NYC Because of Sandy

Tom Douglas and his wife, Jackie Cross, didn’t heed the “shelter in place” advice, but instead headed out Monday evening to Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, while Hurricane Sandy battered the East Coast.

“It was really kind of eerie,” said Seattle’s most famous chef, who was in NYC on a book tour, promoting The Dahlia Bakery Cookbook. “There was really nobody on the street. The wind was howling at about 80 to 90 miles an hour. Rain was blowing sideways. It was pretty cool.”

Tommy D and Jackie spent some time leading up to Sandy’s dramatic arrival getting essential supplies together for the impending disaster. Yup, there was a bottle of Woodford Reserve, along with a bunch of bananas and lox and bagels. On the morning after, the power couple wandered into Korean Spoon on 32nd between Fifth and Broadway for spicy pork in a stone pot and short rib soup.

“We’ve been seeing all these people walking uptown because the power is still out in Lower Manhattan,” he said. “The stores that are open are packed.”

Douglas joked that he might go to the nearby BMW dealership to buy a car to drive home to Seattle because flight schedules are up in the air for the next week or so.

“It looks like we’re going to be stuck here for a while,” he said.

Which means his book tour has been temporarily derailed… or grounded, depending on your preferred mode of transpo. His appearance at the Seattle-based Beecher’s Cheese in the Flatiron District scheduled for tonight has been cancelled and events set for this weekend in San Francisco are likely going to be rescheduled.

“It’s a big bummer,” he said.
