As part of our annual Best Restaurant package this April, our foodie team not only ferretted out the best restaurants and happy hours, but the best food trucks as well. Like many of you, we are hopelessly devoted to these roving gourmet diners and King 5’s Evening Magazine took notice, asking for a tour of our favorite trucks for their new Cheap Eats segment.

Of course, the authority on all things food around these parts is our incomparable food editor Allison Scheff. But, part of what makes her that trusted authority is her dining visits are anonymous to guarantee she’ll receive the same service you do, so having her mug on TV doesn’t quite work. Thus, I took a side step out of my shopping purview to lend a hand. (I would like to say I got conned into it, but let’s be honest, I was in the moment someone said “free food”.)

So on a wet April day, I lead King 5’s Saint Bryan on a food truck hunt, extending from Ballard to Redmond, stopping at a few favorites including El Camion for flaky, buttery fish tacos and perfectly-charred burgers at new-to-Seattle Happy Grillmore (hello red pepper mayo!). I also discovered a comforting new favorite along the way: The smoky Cuban Bowl with black beans, rice and Mojo pork topped with plantains and smoked tomatillo-coconut sauce at Lee Scott’s Snout & Co.

Find out where else we stopped tonight (May 23) at 7 p.m. as the segment airs on King 5. I’m afraid Saint will be doing most of the talking as I spent the majority of my camera time making satisfied noises, stuffing my face and wiping my hands on my jeans. My mother will be so proud.
