Here’s a quandary designed specifically for Seattleites: where to find a caffeinated beverage that will keep you alert while simultaneously making you feel mellow. Enter legal, a new cannabis-infused cold-brew coffee drink made in Longview, which combines the energizing effects of caffeine with the chill factor of cannabis. It’s the brainchild of Adam Stites, who produces Legal under the company name Mirth Provisions (mirthprovisions.com), and who came up with the idea while playing around in his own kitchen. “Say you get up in the morning and want to be creative,” Stites says. “It’s the best of both worlds.” But say you’re trying to kick the coffee habit. Legal also comes in three similarly infused sparkling soda flavors (Rainier cherry, lemon ginger and pomegranate), which deliver a variety of caffeine-free buzzes. “Everyone’s physiology is different,” Stites says, “but our responsibility is to create a consistent product. That way, once you try the product, you’ll know what its effect will be on you in the future.” Stites has received the go-ahead from the state liquor control board to begin releasing Legal for sale in marijuana shops just as they’re getting their licenses this month. Then he can begin in earnest to aid Washingtonians in their pursuit of the perfect beverage.
