After making a five-week journey from Italy by boat across the Atlantic and by truck from New York, the custom-built Neapolitan pizza oven Jerry Corso (Harvest Vine, Betty) and partner Gina Tolentino have been waiting for finally reached Beacon Hill's Bar del Corso this morning at 10 a.m. When I arrived I swear the pounding of their nervous hearts was actually audible as a forklift unloaded it from the truck and prepared to maneuver it through the back window.
Everything was going fine...
until the deep, crushing, cracking sound.
Not good. The weight of the six-thousand-pound monster literally crushed the wheels of the forklift through the sidewalk. Rewind!
A few folks scurried off to find a large piece of steel sheet metal to lay over the pulverized concrete for another try. Update soon!
An hour later, I got a text that the metal plate was going in and Operation Oven was back on.
Corso and Tolentino christen their new oven (which they're already referring to as "our baby") with a bottle of Prosecco.
Bar del Corso, serving Neapolitan-style pizza with market-inspired twists, is expected to open in late June/early July.
