Last year, over one million cruise passengers sailed through the Port of Seattle, whose twin cruise terminals – the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91 and the recently-revamped Bell Street Cruise Terminal at Pier 66 -- once again experienced a record uptick in traffic. Such growth stems from our proximity to Alaska’s stunning landscapes and glaciers, which always exerts a strong pull in summer months, but also the increased glamor of cruising, which is expected to exceed 27 million passengers in 2018. Regardless, there’s never been a better time to bring out your sea legs, especially considering the diverse mix of new ships – ranging from laid-back cruisers to flashy “mega-ships” that function as miniature floating cities – sailing from Seattle through September 

Princess 公主号 

Sailing round-trip from Seattle to Alaska between May and September, the 3080-passenger Ruby Princess sparkles after a multi-million-dollar renovation. Many of her cozy cabins and suites, which also offer larger family units, feature their own private balconies, while public spaces are replete with freshwater pools and hot tubs, outdoor movies and stargazing, duty-free shopping, mini golfing, a Vegas-style casino, Mandarin-speaking tour guides and hosts, and even a passenger singing competition modeled after The Voice of China. Nor will travelers find themselves hungry come meal-time with a global array of award-winning cuisine that includes a congee station, fresh seafood, and at least one Asian cuisine main course available on the buffet menus. The smaller Star Princess also sails through Alaska’s exquisite inside passage, runs one-way trips up to Vancouver, and sails down the U.S. West Coast, Hawaii, Mexico, and South America. Ruby Princes starting at $749 for inside passage to Alaska. Carnival 嘉年华 

With 26 ships and counting, Carnival is the world’s largest cruise line, ferrying millions of travelers around North America, Europe, the Caribbean, and the Far East each year. Key to the fleet is the 2,124-passenger Carnival Legendwhich operates a variety of 7-day Alaska cruises departing from Pier 91 through September. (A different ship"Carnival Spirit”— will take over this route in 2020, when the Legend is rerouted to Tampa). And while the recently-refurbished shipwhose décor channels Camelot, Avalon, and other mythical lore, isn’t Seattle’s most luxurious liner, her playful restaurants, bars, cabins, and communal spaces, which include a casino, wedding chapel, min golfinga kid-friendly waterslide, and live entertainment, still attracts a large following drawn to her mass-market appeal and affordable pricing. Prices starting at $619 per person (subject to change).  

Celebrity Solstice 极致号 

The 2850-passenger Celebrity Solstice prides itself on pampering guests with stylish staterooms and suites, exquisite dining, flawless service, a luxurious spa, and sustainable innovations like solar panels and a “lawn club” outfitted in real grass – also a great place to relax and absorb Alaska’s stunning glaciers and coastline. Through September, the award-winning ship, which has earned steady praise since launching in 2008, will offer “modern luxury” cruises departing weekly from Pier 91. Starting from $899 per person (subject to change). 

Oceania Regatta 大洋游轮利嘉特号 

Oceania’s flagship Regatta may carry only 684 passengers, but the intimate size (albeit by cruise ship standards) allows crew to apply the VIP treatment. State rooms and suites are equipped with Bulgari toiletries, round-the-clock room service and custom “tranquility beds” so comfortable guests even buy mattresses to send homeOceania ships are famed for their food, which Cruise Critic – the TripAdvisor for cruisers -- has described as the ocean’s “best dining” for the past three years running. After a massive refurbishment, the newly-revamped 17-year old Regatta will depart Seattle’s Pier 66 on September 24 on a 20-day cruise to Miami via Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, Costa Rica, the Panama Canal and other places. Starting at $3,399 per person. 

Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas 皇家加勒比海洋赞礼号 

If Ovation of the Seas sounds familiar, it’s because the 4905-passenger “mega-ship,” with its surf and skydiving simulators, bumper cars, robotic bartenders, roc k climbing wall, DJ pool parties, luxury shopping, casino,  dinner and multimedia showsAsian restaurants, and Mandarin-speaking staff once docked in Tianjin, where she was christened in 2016 by Fan BingBing. After three years sailing around Asia, Australia and New Zealand, this mega-cruiser has made her way up to Seattle, kicking off her inaugural Alaska voyage in May 2019. Similar 7-night trips will depart from Seattle’s Pier 91 through September before resuming again in 2020Starting at $981 per person. 

Norwegian (Joy and Bliss) 诺唯真(喜悦号和极乐号) 

The 3802-passenger Norwegian Joy was also designed for China’s burgeoning cruise market, hence her 2017 christening by Chinese pop star Wang Leehom and inaugural sailing out of Shanghai. This year, the freshly-renovated ship was reposted to Seattle’s Pier 66, where it will serve Alaska’s snowballing market alongside the Norwegian Bliss, an even larger 4,004-passenger behemoth that briefly debuted as Seattle’s largest cruise ship, at least until Ovation of the Seas sailed into town. Both ships appeal to Chinese travelers with duty-free shopping, a luxury casino and spa, live musicals and entertainment, Asian restaurants, and adrenaline-pumping activitiesincluding open-air laser tag, go-kart racing, and virtual reality gaming, albeit with a few key distinctions. Norwegian Joy counts more Mandarin-speaking staff and a family-style hot tub, but Norwegian Bliss boasts the brand’s first Starbucks at Sea. Norwegian Joy starting at $799 per person; Norwegian Bliss starting at $749 per person. 

Holland America 荷美游轮 

Holland America’s mid-sized fleet might not include the biggest ships sailing the increasingly trafficked Seattle-Alaska route, but the smaller size often lets captains nudge closer to the 49th state’s jaw-dropping scenery. (Plus “mid-sized,” in cruise-speak, still means 1,500-2,500 passengers).  Meanwhile, the 146 years old company, which is also based in Seattle, demonstrates its innate knowledge of the region with multiple boats offering 7- or 14-day Alaska itineraries departing from Seattle’s Pier 91.  This weekly rotation of sailings includes the brand’s newer “Land+Sea” journeys, which pair a Alaska cruise (4, 7 or 8 day options) with a 1 to 3-night stay in Alaska’s Denali National Park, whose namesake peak is even taller (from base to summit) than Mt. Everest. Starting at $899 per person. “Land + Sea” journey starts at $1,847 per person.
