Ben and Gretchen Knudsen (shown above with their daughter Elke) opened their inviting home store Digs in Ballard (2002 NW Market St; 206.457.5709) last March, after five years of operating in Bellingham, and quickly made it a go-to source for fans of modern design with a Northwest sensibility. As well as showing love for new work by local industrial designers, including Urbancase and Fruitsuper, they’ve got midcentury-mod iconography covered, too, from George Nelson bubble lamps (the Propeller, $365, is pictured) to the Malm Fire Drum ($2,800, shown in white). And for parents wanting to instill this dynamic design ethos ASAP, the kids’ lineup at Digs ranges from sweet Zebi swaddling blankies ($27) to the pert Jonathan Adler junior Lampert sofa ($1,750). This love of hip design extends into the closet as well. Earlier this spring, Digs hosted a pop-up shop by edgy Portland shoe store Solestruck.
