Take time to slow down in Astoria and Warrenton

If you’re the type of person that seeks out the coast when it’s time to push the reset button, there are plenty of activities in Astoria and Warrenton to help you do just that. Watching the massive ships that pass along the Lower Columbia River is one awe-inspiring option. Exploring a trail between rain showers in an old-growth forest is another great way to clear your head. Grabbing a window seat for a front-row view of a passing storm can also energize your spirit. Here are a few ways to safely and comfortably relax on Oregon’s North Coast.

Let Go and Recharge Outdoors

Keep safety in mind when you’re headed to the beach, especially during stormy weather. Gear up in waterproof layers for the beach or a trail. One of the best places to watch ships or clouds roll in is the South Jetty Observation Deck at Fort Stevens State Park. From the elevated and uncovered platform, feel the waves crash into the rocky two-mile jetty as the wind picks up. Head to Fort Clatsop, a part of the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, to learn about how the Corps spent the winter of 1805-06. Then, hit the Fort-to-Sea Trail or one of its spurs to venture through forest and dunes as you retrace the explorers’ steps. Trek to the top of the Astoria Column where it can feel as though you’re above the clouds.

Take It Easy Indoors

Want to experience the beauty of the giant cargo ships, but not a fan of the soggy side effects? Head to the Columbia River Maritime Museum to view ships from the large windows along the river after learning more about the current and historic marine traffic at its exhibits. You can also get a front-row experience by dining at one of the many restaurants, coffeeshops and pubs with riverfront seating. Inspire your creative side with a visit to the numerous shops featuring local artisans and makers before settling in to finish your forgotten craft project or start a new one with the help of local experts.

Make a Night of It

Stay in a room with a view and all the creature comforts you need to fully reset and refresh when you escape to Astoria and Warrenton this fall or winter.
